Short stays are not only for the person being cared for. The ministry's own description says they exist "to reduce the burden of care on the family". There is no need to feel awkward about using them.
Family circumstances are a listed reason
The conditions the ministry gives are:
- The person's physical or mental condition is poor
- Illness, a family occasion, or a business trip for the carer
If the carer goes down, care at home stops. Resting is part of the design.

Thirty consecutive days is the limit
Both are capped at 30 days in a row. Beyond that, the conversation moves to residential care.
Booked through your care manager
It goes into the care plan; you do not ring the facility yourself. Without a care manager, ask a community support centre.
Ask early. New Year, Obon and long weekends fill up, and "from next week" may not be possible. Rather than looking after a crisis, use it once while things are calm so that everyone is used to it.
